A device on short tour

Postby PA_Sgt on Thu Oct 06, 2005 5:00 am

This is a new one on me, I have been in 24 years and have a short tour ribbon, and have never seen or heard of the A device. Then again I have not kept up on all the changes they seem to keep making. I will see if I can dig up some info on this and will post what I find

A device

Here is what I found on the ribbon this explains why I have never heard of it, not many Airman make it to the Artic, and it is fairly new. Good Catch

Authorized by the Chief of Staff, U.S. Air Force, October 12, 1980.

Before January 6, 1986, the ribbon was awarded to Air Force and Air Force Reserve members credited with completion of an overseas tour on or after September 1, 1980. Air Force and Air Force Reserve members serving as of January 6, 1986, or later are entitled to reflect all Air Force overseas tours credited during their career. A Service member may wear both ribbons, if appropriate. The short tour ribbon takes precedence over the long-tour ribbon when both are worn. Authorized Device: Oak leaf Cluster.

A metallic, bronze, letter "A" worn centered on the Air Force Overseas Ribbon-Short Tour. Awarded to Air Force Active, Reserve and Guard Personnel serving on or after 10 Feb 2002, credited with completion of a short Air Force Overseas tour North of the Artic Circle, regardless of date of tour completion. When worn with Oak Leaf Clusters, place the "A" Device to the wearer's right of the clusters. Wear only one "A" Device on the ribbon. Do not use to represent subsequent awards.

Other Issues

Postby wolves69 on Sun Nov 27, 2005 4:48 am

The Joint Meritorious Unit Award may be issued more then once (Oak Leafs)

The Marksmanship Ribbon with B/S seems smaller then normal AF stars (might just be my computer).

The "E", "S" silver letters are missing from the Navy Marksmanship Medals

Otherwise, great job...

According to Air Force Instruction 36-2903, Dress and Personal Appearance of Air Force Personnel, the USCG Special Operations Service ribbon takes precedence over the AF Longevity Service Award. The Ultimate Rack Builder has it reversed.

Other than that small glitch, this tool is a God-send for those of us that have served in more than one branch. Hell, I wear Navy, Air Force & Coast Guard ribbons on my Air Force uniform!

Keep up the great work, Sarge!

problem

Postby guest on Tue Jan 17, 2006 8:58 am

Hello
I got your site from a friend and decided to make my rack, which I have found some problems
The navy marksmanship medal go after the AF Basic training ribbon.
The navy marksmanship ribbons can have a "silver E" to denote expert
The southwest asia device has a device on it but only showing 1 ribbon

Now as I try to recreate my ribbon rack, it will not show the AF outstanding unit ribbon and puts the ARCOM in front of AF Comm

there should be a button to show which branch of the military your are in to coordinate which way the ribbons are supposed to be presented

Do not know what to suggest for the missing ribbon

selecting service button

When selecting your ribbons, there is a button that allows you to select your current branch of service. If you did not select anything it defaults to the Army, with this selection you will not see the AF outstanding unit award becasue the Army wears there unit awards on the right side of the uniform.

Just my thoughts

AF NCO PME Ribbon

Postby JHReid2 on Tue Jan 17, 2006 9:28 pm

The numbering needs to be changed to reflect the AF NCO Professional Military Education Graduate Ribbon: Image

is above the Army NCO Professional Development Ribbon: Image when worn on a USAF Rack.

I suggest the AFNCO number be changed to 18349 in the Air Force column at: http://ultimaterack.ajandj.com/ribbons_ ... ?service=8.

That way, it will display in higher precedence when worn with the Army NCOPD on the USAF uniform.

I should have explained this better...

The values in each column are specific to that column. Hence, when someone enters "Air Force," for instance, in the current service... the program checks the order of the Air Force column.

The higher the number IN THE SERVICE'S COLUMN, the lower the precedence.

Currently (although I'm going to change it at this moment so if you look in the near future it will not be the way I'm describing it), the Army NCOPD ribbon's value in the Air Force column is 18300. The AF NCO ribbon is 18350 in the Air Force column. This is obviously wrong. There are two ways to fix this. One if to switch their numbers, the other way is to move one or the other to the other side of the other.

Hence, to fix it the following scenarios are possible:
Change Army NCOPD to 18350 and the AF one to 18300 (in the Air Force column).
Change the Army NCOPD to 18351 leaving the AF one alone.
Change the AF NCO ribbon to 18299 leaving the Army one alone.

I usually choose to do option number 1. And that's what I'll be doing.

Thanks for the heads up.

Additional issues when choosing USAF as your service with multi-service awards:

The Army Service Ribbon and Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon show up in higher precedence than the Air Force Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon and the Air Force Training Ribbon.

I somehow missed these before... Sorry!

Much of that comes from starting with a benchmark of all services with the Army order of precedence...
