Message Board "hacked"

Postby John Asendorf on Sun Mar 12, 2006 1:02 pm

Well, some script kiddies pushed a little SQL insertion onto the message board making it look like it'd been "hacked"... this was my fault for not having updated the message board code during any of the past 8 releases of phpBB. My fault, no one else's. As a computer professional I should know better.

As for its content... about it being from some Islamic group... it must be an Islamic group operating out of the U.S. because the attack came from a BellSouth IP address. My guess is that it was from some kids who wanted people to believe it was some Islamic group. While I appreciate all the notes that the board had been hacked, if it happens again, I ask you to please leave off the "towelheads" and "muzzies" comments or at least keep them to yourself. I don't share your sentiments of lumping all Muslims into one group nor do I take the denigration of ANY religion lightly. If for no other reason than to respect the religion of hundreds (if not thousands) of American servicemen who practice Islam, I will not be party to those who would attack their religion.

It was kinda cute, if you ask me.

Is "muzzie" really supposed to be insulting? :X

He's right. This is not the place to express personal feelings (names included) about a particular group.

But the 'moderator" link name has been changed to the group name that "hacked" the site.

re Hacked

Glad to hear that it was nothing serious, and I agree with your assesment of it being "amateur" I also agree that this site is not for bashing of anyone. I enjoy this site because it is a great tool to learn about other services and the history behind the awards.

Thanks for keeping it going

I'm not sure what you mean by "they changed the moderator links"... The moderator group has always been called "Kick Ass Dukes"... seriously...

For those wondering why the moderators' group is called "Kick Ass Dukes" the story is as follows:

So, I'm working on installing this message board one evening and at the same time I'm listening to a band called Tenacious D. For those unfamiliar with Tenacious D, it is a tongue-in-cheek "hard rock" band fronted by Jack Black (of TV and movies) and Kyle Gass. They have a song called "City Hall." The song absurdly runs through a total overthrow of the the government and Jack and Kyle become the "Rulers of the Country"... and they decide to rule as Two Kings. Well, Jack doesn't care much for that set-up so he sends Kyle to Idaho, ostensibly to investigate a potato famine. While he's gone Jack holds a meeting with Parliament where he gets angry about Kyle "encroaching on my decrees!!!" So Jack asks Parliament to make Kyle a "Duke... a Kick Ass Duke."

So that's where Kick Ass Dukes came from... it was in my headphones and I thought it was funny.
