Best bet for getting things moving is to post authoritative information on the requested states' ribbons. Right now we're (meaning mechinfantry!) is aiming at targets of opportunity. The easier it is to find info, the better chance there is he'll be able to put it together. Links to authoritative websites, PAO information for the state's auhtority on NG awards, etc. is all very helpful in making it a reality. Also, you can create the ribbons using the Ultimate Ribbon Creator here:

It looks like armyawards.com has some info already on this page:

http://armyawards.com/arng/md/mdawards.shtml

but I'm about to email the army and air national guards and ask for their help in obtaining higher-quality images or specifications.

more info on Maryland awards

Postby PA-SGT on Fri Dec 02, 2005 8:42 pm

I spent 14 years with the Maryland Air Guard before moving to PA and taking an AGR position there. What are you trying to find out about there awards? On the Air side I do not think you will find any pictures of the ribbons, and from my research the site you posted has got as good a quality as most of the other sites that I have seen. There are several sites where you can see the state ribbons, try readyforinspection.com they have graphics of most of the states. Also I know Mechinfantry is almost ready to post both Maryland and PA on this site, he has been working hard to get them together. If you have questions on the specs for the awards I may be able to help answer some of those questions

good luck in your search let us know what you find

I've got an email from CMSgt Philip G. Marll describing Maryland NG awards, and it has some corrections and additions to what is currently on the site. A few include:

The MDNG DSM should be a Cross instead of a Medal
The DSC is authorized for a "V" device
Addition of the MDNG Adjutant General's Distinguished Unit RibbonImage
The MDNG AGDUR is authorized for bronze arabic numerals
The MDNGOA/FSYR is authorized for up to four bronze botonees
Addition of the MDANG First Sergeant RibbonImage
Addition of the MDNG Counterdrug RibbonImage
The MDNG State Service Medal is authorized for bronze, silver, and gold botonees
The MDNG ESM should be State Active Duty Medal

I'm sending the document I got from CMSgt Marll to SSG Asendorf, but if anyone else wants it, just give me your email and I'll send it off to you.

Re state awards

Postby PA-SGT on Sat Feb 11, 2006 1:59 pm

Glaug-Eldare

Thanks for the info, I have already submitted the first sgt ribbon and the counter drug, I realized that I had missed those 2, I also provided the info about the Botonee and the diamond, I did not know how to do those, so John is working on them. Thanks for catching the Cross issue, I just copied what was on another site I was using to get the ribbons designed. I was not aware of the MDNG Adjutant General's Distinguished Unit Ribbon. is this a fairly new one? I left the Md Gaurd 3 years ago. I would be interested in the document you received, because I still need to update the WIkI site. Does it include descriptions and criteria?

Thanks

Yes, it has criteria and appurtenances, but not specific dimensions. It doesn't mention how old the awards are, but I'm not about to complain. What's your email addy? I'll send it over for ya.

John,

I e-mailed you a scan of the botonee device. Let me know if it doesn't come through. If anyone has questions about MD awards, I can probably help... I've kept the wikipedia listing on Maryland state awards up to date, and it includes the new Adj Gen Dist Unit Award and civilian service medal.

Wikki

Postby PA-SGT on Thu Jul 06, 2006 8:40 pm

Wade, we also have a wikki site, please feel free to add data to our site as well if you noticed every award has a link under it that will take you the wikki site. We just need individuals to fill in the blanks. All you have to do is let John know that you are interested in helping out and I am sure that he will give you permission to add data to the Wikki.

I posted information on the medals on the ultimate rack wiki... what I posted was cut and pasted from the NG listing on wikipedia. The entries are a synthesis of the information in MDARNG reg 672-1 and MDANGI 36-2803. The criteria for some of the awards differ somewhat depending on if you're in the ARNG or the ANG (the Outstanding Unit Ribbon and Recruiting Medal are two examples). I tried not to get too much into the weeds on the exact criteria because if I had the entries would have gone on for pages for some of them.

A couple of notes:

1. Many of the award names on UltimateRack are incorrect. I used the correct name of the award in the description. Here's a complete listing of the correct names of all Maryland NG awards (does not include MD Defense Force awards):

a. State of Maryland Distinguished Service Cross
b. Maryland Medal for Valor
c. State of Maryland Meritorious Service Medal
d. State of Maryland Commendation Medal
e. Maryland Outstanding Unit Ribbon
f. Maryland National Guard Adjutant General’s Distinguished Unit Ribbon
g. Maryland National Guard Outstanding Airman/First Sergeant of the Year Ribbon (a.k.a., Maryland National Guard Outstanding Soldier/Airman/NCO of the Year Ribbon on the Army side)
h. Maryland Air National Guard First Sergeant Ribbon
i. Maryland National Guard Recruiting Medal
j. Maryland National Guard Overseas Service Ribbon
k. Maryland National Guard Counterdrug Ribbon
l. Maryland National Guard State Service Medal
m. Maryland National Guard State Active Duty Medal
n. Maryland National Guard Meritorious Civilian Service Medal
o. Maryland World War I Service Medal
p. Maryland Selected Reserve Force Medal (obsolete)

2. Although the Selected Reserve Force Medal was authorized in the 1960s according to one reference I have, I have never seen an actual example of this medal and so I'm not certain it was ever actually produced.
