BUG - USAF Awards on Army Uniform

Postby JHReid2 on Tue Jan 17, 2006 12:27 am

I have one - Seems complicated to me, but will probably be easy enough for a guy like you who can do all this!

When going from the Air Force to the Army, a number of Air Force awards shift precedence and are required to be worn below the Army awards.

Here's what AR 670-1 has to say about it:

"Personnel may wear service medals and service and training ribbons awarded by other U.S. Services on the Army uniform, except for the Air Force Longevity Service Award ribbon and Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard marksmanship medals and ribbons. Personnel will wear service and training medals and ribbons awarded by other U.S. Services after U.S. Army service and training ribbons, and before foreign awards."

It's easier in this case to use a visual aid, so here's the graphic example of how my USAF ribbons are supposed to be worn correctly on the Army uniform:

Here's how your program constructs the rack:

Can you help?

Here's another small one -

The Air Force Organizational Excellence Award shows up on the left side rack when current service of Army is selected. It should actually be worn on the right side.

I'll bet that one is easier to fix than the one cited above!

The order of ribbons for each service can be peaked at by going to this file:

http://ultimaterack.ajandj.com/ribbons_order.php

By selecting the column for the service you wish to check, it will order the ribbons as they are ordered in the program for that service.

If you can determine the exact changes, I will make them. Most of the problem stems from me initially setting the application up solely for Army ribbons and then adding all the other stuff later. Since there are now almost 500 ribbons in the system it is daunting to get one's head wrapped around all of them (particularly when there's a 5 month old in the other room who is far more interesting than my code ;) ). But, if you post the exact changes, they're easy enough for me to make and I'll make them.

OK - Here are the specific changes for the Air Force ribbons when worn on the Army uniform, according to AR 670-1, and how it seems they should play out in code logic (I'm not a code writer, so I'm trying to just use basic logic here):

IF Service = Army, then:

AFCRM (Air Force Combat Readiness Medal - currently equals 16250 in the Army column) Should equal 18601 (just after Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon 18600)

ORSTAF (Overseas Ribbon Short Tour - Currently equals 18175 in the Army column) Should equal 18602 (just after Air Force Combat Readiness Medal 18601)

ORLTAF (Overseas Ribbon Long Tour - Currently equals 18176 in the Army column) Should equal 18603 (just after Overseas Ribbon Short Tour 18602)

ESRAF (Expeditionary Service Ribbon - Currently equals 18180 in the Army column) Should equal 18604 (just after Overseas Ribbon Long Tour 18603)

LSAAF (Longevity Service Award - Currently equals 18185 in the Army column) Should equal DO NOT DISPLAY

MTIRAF (Military Training Instructor Ribbon - Currently equals 18188 in the Army column) Should equal 18605 (just after Expeditionary Service Ribbon 18604)

RRAF (Air Force Recruiter Ribbon - Currently equals 18191 in the Army column) Should equal 18606 (just after Military Training Instructor Ribbon 18605)

AFNCO (AF NCO Professional Military Education Graduate Ribbon - Currently equals 18350 in the Army column) Should equal 18607 (just after Air Force Recruiter Ribbon 18606)

BMTHGR (Basic Military Training Honor Graduate Ribbon - Currently equals 18450 in the Army column) Should equal 18608 (just after AF NCO Professional Military Education Graduate Ribbon 18607)

MARAF (Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon - Currently equals 18610 in the Army column) Should equal DO NOT DISPLAY

AFTR [Training Ribbon (Air Force) - Currently equals 18191 in the Army column] Should equal 18609 (just after Basic Military Training Honor Graduate Ribbon 18608)

Here’s the simplified version:

AFCRM (Air Force Combat Readiness Medal) - Should equal 18601

ORSTAF (Overseas Ribbon Short Tour) - Should equal 18602

ORLTAF (Overseas Ribbon Long Tour) - Should equal 18603

ESRAF (Expeditionary Service Ribbon) - Should equal 18604

LSAAF (Longevity Service Award) - Should equal DO NOT DISPLAY

MTIRAF (Military Training Instructor Ribbon) - Should equal 18605

RRAF (Air Force Recruiter Ribbon) - Should equal 18606

AFNCO (AF NCO Professional Military Education Graduate Ribbon) - Should equal 18607

BMTHGR (Basic Military Training Honor Graduate Ribbon) - Should equal 18608

MARAF (Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon) - Should equal DO NOT DISPLAY

AFTR [Training Ribbon (Air Force)] Should equal 18609

That should do it for the Air Force ribbons on the Army uniform, but the ribbons from the other services obviously need to be updated for correct wear on the Army uniform, as well.

If you want help with doing this, let me know what it is you're looking for and in turn, I'll let you know what I can do to assist.

Thanks for your time and thanks again for a great site!

For the AFOEA (Air Force Organizational Excellence Award), it looks like you just need a "1" in the far right column - Based on what I saw with the other Unit awards.

For clarification - Here's the long quotation from AR 670-1, which specifically addresses the AF Combat Readiness Medal's precedence when worn on the Army uniform, along with that of the service awards from other services:

d. U.S. service (campaign) medals, and service and training ribbons. U.S. service (campaign) medals, and service
and training ribbons authorized for wear on the uniform are listed below, in their order of precedence. Personnel may
wear service medals and service and training ribbons awarded by other U.S. Services on the Army uniform, except for
the Air Force Longevity Service Award ribbon and Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard marksmanship medals and
ribbons. Personnel will wear service and training medals and ribbons awarded by other U.S. Services after U.S. Army
service and training ribbons, and before foreign awards.

(1) Prisoner of War Medal.
(2) Good Conduct Medal. Good Conduct Medals from the other Services follow the Army Good Conduct Medal in
order of precedence. The Army reserve components’ Achievement Medal and equivalents awarded by other Service
reserve components follow the Army Good Conduct Medal and Good Conduct Medals from the other U.S. Services, in
order of precedence.
(3) American Defense Service Medal.
(4) Women’s Army Corps Service Medal.
(5) American Campaign Medal.
(6) Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal.
(7) European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal.
(8 ) World War II Victory Medal.
(9) Army of Occupation Medal.
(10) Medal for Humane Action.
(11) National Defense Service Medal.
(12) Korean Service Medal.
(13) Antarctica Service Medal.
(14) Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
(15) Vietnam Service Medal.
(16) Southwest Asia Service Medal.
(17) Global War on Terrorism—Expeditionary Medal.
(18 ) Global War on Terrorism—Service Medal.
(19) Kosovo Campaign Medal.
(20) Korean Defense Service Medal.
(21) Armed Forces Service Medal.
(22) Humanitarian Service Medal.
(23) Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
(24) Armed Forces Reserve Medal.
(25) NCO Professional Development Ribbon.
(26) Army Service Ribbon.
(27) Overseas Service Ribbon.
(28 ) Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon.
(29) Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon.
(30) Air Force Combat Readiness Medal.
(31) Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

This list can obviously be used as the point of reference for adjusting USN, USMC and USCG ribbons worn on the Army uniform, as well.

As far as what to do when there are ribbons worn from more than 2 services (i.e.: Army, USMC and USCG), I don't have a reference.

I do remember that age of the service takes precedence in some instances, but I'm not sure if that would apply in this case as well.

Anyone care to hazard a guess?

Yeah, it's a super train wreck for more than three services. I've got plans in the works to try and fix that.

Alrighty, I've made the changes except that there is currently no way to put "not worn" or "do not display"... one more thing to write!

Guess all I can say for that is to not select them for the timebeing until I can get that fixed.

Give her a whil and see what happens.

Works great on the Army side - Thanks!

However - When I redid my USAF rack, I noticed some issues which I will post to that thread.
